About Breakaway
The 2010 FRC Game!
Breakaway is the 2010 game for the FIRST Robotics Competition. The game takes place in a 54'x27' arena, most of which is covered by carpet.
Teams have six weeks to plan, construct, and ship a robot capable of pushing, shooting, kicking, etc. soccer balls into one of their two goals, located in the corners of their side of the field. Teams are paired up with two different teams for each game to form an alliance.
The game starts with a 15 second autonomous period. In this period, the human operators may not drive the bot, but instead have to give it a program to run itself. After the autonomous period, there is a two minute teleoperated period in which the human operators may guide the robot. The last 20 seconds of the teleoperated period is the finale.
The field is split into third by three sets of hill/bumps, which hinder the movement across the field. On the hills facing the center are two towers that help support the ball return system. If the robot is hanging off of the ball return tower, the team may receive 2 bonus points. If another alliance robot is hanging off of your robot or vise versa, the hanging bot receives 3 bonus points. Standard goals are worth 1 point. When a goal is scored, a player hands the ball to a team member that is holding the trident. That team member must use the trident to place the ball onto the ball delivery system within 11 seconds or receive a penalty. The game ends after the teleoperated period, and points are tallied. Each robot on the winning alliance receives a win.
